Introduction to Masterplan @ Stivichall Primary School
Our school is currently being re-built, and during the design process for this new school building, we have been investigating what makes for good learning spaces and what the schools of the future might (or should) be like. Our work with the artists from Talking Birds began in June 2005, and while we explored our outdoor space we made a sculpture for the dell, a big hollow in our school grounds. The sculpture echoes the shape of the old school buildings and is filled with lenses and filters to help people look at the school and dell differently. We are treating the sculpture as our "levelling stone" (like the phoenix levelling stone in Coventry Precinct) and it will to be the thing that remains as a reminder of the old school for the new school's future pupils. Since then, we have been working with our architects on the design of our future school. We have conducted various investigations, visiting other new schools and exploring how the light moves around our school site. We have also had a go at designing classrooms, entrance halls, toilets and cloakrooms and now we have designed the toilet blocks for our new school for real - we're due to move into the new building in October 2008.
