3a. Inspiration To get some ideas for our designs, we looked at magazines on interior design [Living etc, Grand Designs and Elle Decoration], and we looked at books on bathroom and toilet design. [Our favourite was a book on contemporary toilet design, called 'Flush' because it has loads of really cool pictures!] We marked up stuff we liked and then we had a discussion about what we'd seen, what we thought we could adapt to use in the toilets at Finham and what ideas looking at these books and magazines had given us. |

| 2b. Consulting the cleaner We asked Sue the cleaner to visit us so that we could ask her what she thought of our ideas so far. We asked her questions about whether some surfaces are easier to clean than others, and whether some colours work better than others. She told us that she'd be glad to see the toilets made a bit more colourful and interesting, maybe with some abstract patterns on the walls. There are some floor colours which mark quite easily and so she advised us to steer clear of those, but said that the lino flooring works best if it curves up the bottom of the wall at each edge, a bit like skirting board, because this means it is easier to mop and it stops water seeping into the walls. Stainless steel is great because it's quite easy to clean, as is anti-graffitti varnish on any painted walls. Sue agreed that there should be more bins, and she thought that maybe a simple stainless steel one would go well with our ideas. |

| 3c. Choosing our themes Once we'd consulted the cleaner, we started to try and bring all our ideas together so that we could choose themes for the designers to work towards. We decided that we should have a theme for each block, and that the girls and boys designing the toilets in that block could interpret the theme how they wanted. We made a list of our favourite things from the magazines and books and from the conversations we'd had with our mates. From these we came up with five things: simple graphic outline images of (famous?) people; stripes or mosaics; riveted metal sheets; red and green together; swirly patterns, perhaps with optical illusions. From these we decided on our two themes. For J-block we decided the theme should be black and white/urban/cityscape/movies. For M-block we decided the theme should be shapes and colours/pop art. |
