4a. J-block We had a loose theme of black and white/urban/movies, but quickly decided that if we only used black and white it would be too dull and too similar to our school uniforms. So we started talking about adding in some red and purple to brighten it up, and we went off to the library to do a bit of research. We decided we wanted to have a large image on one wall - of an iconic figure. There was a picture in one of the interiors magazines that we really liked, which showed a man drawn on computer - a stylised portrait in one flat colour - but somehow more detailed and identifiable than a plain silhouette. We thought maybe we could use that style to make an image of a black and white movie star, such as Audrey Hepburn, and that this would be a great image to go on the wall by the sinks in J-block. We wanted bright cubicles, so we chose red for these, and followed the red through on the wall under the window - making it striped with purple, grey and cream. We thought that perhaps the stripes could help us to make the colour graduate from red next to the cubicles round to grey next to the sinks, and decided that we would have a large strip of stainless steel mirror above the sinks and a full length piece in the gap to the left of the cubicles. This should give you an idea of what we want it to look like. The door is behind you on your right, and the wall behind you is also striped in red and purple. | 4b. M-block Our theme was pop art, and we began by looking for pop art online. We found a motif which used rectangles with rounded corners overlapping each other. Where the shapes overlapped, the colours mixed. We thought a variation on this would make a great wall decoration in the M-block toilets. We drew the motif out a few times and tried different colours, but in the end we decided that several shades of blue would probably work best. Early on, we had an idea to make the back walls of the cubicles different colours. We thought we could make the side walls and doors a pale neutral grey colour but have a blast of colour on the back wall, with the outside two in blue, the next two in red and the centre cubicle in yellow. We want to put hooks on the back of the door too, so you have somewhere to hang your bag. We talked a lot about mirrors, and finally decided to put a full length stainless steel mirror at either end of the 'corridor' to bounce the light around a bit, and also to put 2 strips opposite each other above the sinks so you can see the back of your hair as well as your face. This view [below] should give you an idea of how it might look. The room has been opened up a bit so that you can see, and the wall opposite the sinks has been taken out. The dark grey strips are stainless steel mirror, and the floor is dark blue. Hover your mouse over the image for a little more detail. |
