5a. J-block We had a loose theme of black and white/urban/movies, but quickly decided that we wanted to add in some colour. We started thinking about using a cityscape - some tower blocks - and decided that we could have tower blocks with windows painted red, orange and yellow as if they were lit. We decided that the wall should be orange so that it would look a bit like a sunset, but wouldn't be too dark. It took us a long time to decide whether the cubicles and sink-cupboards should be orange or grey, and whether the floor should be orange or black, and whether the wall behind the urinal should be orange or grey - but in the end we decided on a black floor, orange wall behind the urinals and pale grey for the cubicles and sink unit. We decided we wanted some kind of splashback above the sink, and thought about tiles, but then decided that we could get a large piece of stainless steel which was mirrored across the centre but brushed across the top and bottom so that it could be both a splashback and a mirror. | 5b. M-block Our theme was pop art. We found a design that had stripes travelling across the page with a few circles dotted around, and we thought this might be a good place to start, so we drew lots of different versions of the stripes and decided we liked them in red, orange and yellow. We took a long time (and a lot of sketches) to decide how wide we wanted the stripes, and how much stripe we wanted in relation to how much white wall - because we didn't want to make the colours too overpowering. We thought that we could use the fact that the design had circles here and there to incorporate permanent things like the hand dryer and radiator on the wall, but also thought we could have some circles cut out of stainless steel mirrors so that there would be more bits of mirror to help bounce light around - and allow more than 3 people at a time to look at themselves if they needed to! The image below should give you an idea of how it might look. Hover your mouse over the image for a bit more detail. |
