5. Surprise Poems We sat down to look at the Dell, and the surprising thing was that the longer we sat and looked, the quieter and calmer everyone became. We had a sheet of paper on which we had to record what we could see and hear. When we'd all finished writing, Janet [chief investigator] asked us to cross certain words out, and when we read back the words that were left on the page, we realised we'd written some pretty good poems about the Dell. [see below for a few examples].

Ashes from a bonfire Trees rustling in the wind Grass and mud Daisies and twigs Different to any other place A big, fat stump of a tree The wind wooshing by me The fresh air, the grass Concrete, nettles, ash I am free and relaxed Concrete steps Children playing Air grass Metal ash So relaxed, I want to run round but I can't be bothered! Nettles that can sting you Cars outside Flowers that are daisies Grass and leaves, concrete and trees Overgrown and dark There's hardly any sun. An old tree stump Cars going by Green grass My own bumpy cap Very calm and quiet Ashes from the old rusty barbeque float in the cool air A gentle breeze rustles through the trees The grass and all the trees around me The air rushing through my hands Peaceful and soothing Barking and quiet that really stands out Birds flying near the ear The fresh air Tickly grass Like a bee Lots of trees and bushes Music from the cars People that are sweaty Lots of leaves Like the jungle with no animals A lonely old tree The sweet sound of birds singing The fresh air right in front of me The smooth grass Am I on holiday ? Big trees Sky aeroplane The sweet sound of birds Blossom The grass and the trees Sad no-one looks after the nettles
