[* WHY WE NEED YOUR HELP!

10a. Designing the artwork

Our design delegates met to consider the design brief. As well as the brief [the instructions for the designers] we also had a list of ideas from the discussions that Years 2 and 5 had last week.

So we started by looking at both of these, and reminding ourselves what we'd seen when we went on our fact finding mission to Coventry city centre. We also remembered the idea we'd had last week [when we were talking about different perspectives] to include lots of lenses and coloured filters for people to look through.

We like the idea of different filters to look through because [like the WaterWindow in Priory Place] these could slightly change the way people see the Dell and the school when they look through them. We think that looking through 'windows' might make people look a bit more carefully, or maybe just differently, at these things which are so familiar that we walk past them everyday without really looking.

10b. Where we got our inspiration

So we had decided that we wanted to use lots of filters and lenses, but we didn't know what shape we wanted for the structure that would hold these 'windows'. We started to sketch ideas for the structure, and as we sketched, we began talking about webs. We remembered that there was a lovely close up photograph of a spiders web that one of the Investigators had taken when we were looking at the Dell in close up; and we started to think that maybe a web was quite a good symbol to use for our artwork, because our investigation had thrown up a web of connections, and we thought that maybe the school operates a little like a web [and also like the internet/world wide web] by connecting lots of different people - pupils, teachers, parents and others.

We liked the idea of a web, but we couldn't find a good shape for our web, because we thought if it looked too much like a spiders web it might scare some of the younger children! So then we went to look at the site for the artwork again to see if it might give us any ideas. We stood and looked into the Dell, and then we turned and looked back at the school and we started to think that, if these buildings were soon to be demolished, maybe we could use the shape of them in our artwork, so that we could leave a trace of the old school in the new school.

10c. Making a model

So we traced round the photo of the school buildings [below] and we thought that this would make a really good outline shape for our 'web'.

We also made a model of our idea in wire to see what it would look like in three dimensions. It was quite hard to use the wire, but our model [below] gives us a good idea of how the artwork could look.

10d. Consultation

Then we did one last picture, of our model on site in the Dell [below], and we put it up onto a board for the School Fete. We asked people at the Fete to tell us what they thought of our ideas for the Dell and the artwork.

We explained:
"We have come up with an artwork for the Dell to make it look more interesting. It's going to be an aluminium frame with coloured glass and lenses placed into it. We designed the sculpture to follow the shape of the school roof and the lenses and coloured glass are meant to inspire you to creativity because they give you a different view of the Dell."

Luckily, they seemed to like it!
