Cloakrooms

Cloakrooms aren't just for hanging coats up. In between the coming and going of coats and bags four times a day (morning, playtime, lunchtime and hometime) they are used as quiet teaching space for small group work, display space and meeting space (for example for the Playground Pals). They're pretty busy places. This year 2 class had a heated debate about coloured pegs ('do we have to go for pink for girls and blue for boys?') because 'colour is important'. What else is important is that the cloakroom makes you feel comfortable and able to settle in. They thought there should be lots of light, benches for all and the pegs should be coloured - or named - or at least differently organised...

Their designs ask:

What if the cloakroom was like a corridor that you used to get in and out of the building - like an airlock to the classroom? It could have 'stepping stones' made of round, coloured doormats to help encourage you to wipe your feet.

What if there was a little tiny window above every coat peg so everyone had their own indvidual personalised 'view' when they hung up their coat? They could be different coloured glass so that the cloakroom was dotted with squares of coloured light on a sunny day, like a cathedral.

In 2008, a group of students were able to design (although not lay out) the toilet blocks for the new school building. These designs can be viewed by clicking here...or on the 'new toilets' link below right.
