Toilets Everyone always has plenty to say about toilets. No-one likes them. Not public ones anyway - and especially not school toilets. They smell. People (well, boys) wee on the floor instead of in the urinals. The taps don't work properly so some people don't wash their hands which makes others paranoid about germs. There are always lumps of tissue paper stuck to the ceiling. Toilets become quickly blocked because they get filled with tissue and not flushed. Soap is always a hot topic too. No-one ever likes it. It makes your hands smell horrid - and the smell never comes off. We could go on (and this year five class did) but how hard can it be, really, to get the most important rooms in the school right? Aside from the requests for nice soap, working taps, reliable cubicle security so you can use the toilet without fear of being spied upon or burst in on - this year five class had some useful insights and good ideas (which of course were passed on to our architects). Like, how about a circular room for the toilets, so no-one can get knocked into the corner and hurt when they are using the urinal (as they can in the current toilet block). Or what about a wide double-sided central urinal at floor level that runs the width of the toilet block? How about big frosted windows which open for natural lighting and ventilation? Or a coded door to keep girls out? And how about built in sinks and some automatic air freshener? [<Back to previous page] |

In 2008, a group of students were able to design (although not lay out) the toilet blocks for the new school building. These designs can be viewed by clicking here...or on the 'new toilets' link below right.
