Local Heroes

by Alan Rivett & the team at Warwick Arts Centre

Who are Coventry's Local Heroes?
Who are the ordinary people that have made an impact?
Whose stories will be told in four hundred years time?

Local Heroes collects together images of Coventry's heroes, both recognised and unsung, from Godiva to the present day.

In a city which is known for re-building and re-invention, large scale projected montages of these images counterpoint and animate the temporary scaffolded structures which cocoon the city's landmarks.

Virtual Illuminations

by Andy Telford, Urban & Landscape Design, Coventry City Council

A new urban myth circulates during the festival; move over Great Wall of China - the Coventry ring road, lit up in vibrant colour for the duration of the festival, has become the second man-made structure visible from space...

Ring Road
The ring-road becomes a ring of light, as the flyover walls are uplit in shades of blue and purple. Each junction is lit a different colour, these 'gateways of light' welcome you into the city centre. Underneath the flyovers, people are amazed to see that the ring road appears to be made of glass as the (projected) undersides of vehicles - and even one or two canal boats - pass overhead.

Station
The arrival and departure of trains trigger lighting colour washes and projections to appear on the station’s sandstone retaining walls. Projected sequences around the themes of transience in society and the passage of time are especially commissioned from Coventry artists and film-makers.

Buildings
Lasers on the tops of all thirteen of the city centre’s tower blocks chase each other, ending with all connecting and creating a web of light over the city centre. The Three Towers weather forecasting scheme is turned into 'party mode'. Lights on the crown of each building continually scroll through the colours of the rainbow, whilst the vertical LED lights follow bouncing ball and random sparkle programmes. Preview images of festival events are projected on to the spire and tower of each of the three historic spires, using the recently installed projectors.
